MIAMI (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds benefited from Major League Baseball's new instant replay system and the rule preventing catchers from blocking the plate in a 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday night. Reds starter Johnny Cueto struck out nine and allowed one run in seven innings and Ryan Ludwick drove in two runs.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Bengals are building their defense around linebacker Vontaze Burfict, a sign of how much he means to the franchise as he enters his third season. The Pro Bowl linebacker is growing into the leader that coach Marvin Lewis has craved.

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Mahalo Princess held off 8-5 favorite Upbeat Mood by a head to win the $77,000 feature at Del Mar on Thursday. Ridden by Kayla Stra, Mahalo Princess ran five furlongs on the turf in 56.85 seconds and paid $30.60, $10.60 and $5 at 14-1 odds.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Sinistra edged Big Business by a nose Thursday in the $100,000 Evan Shipman for New York-breds at Saratoga Race Course. Trained by Karl Grusmark for owner-breeder Edward Shapoff, the 4-year-old Stonesider gelding came from just off the pace to run down 8-5 favorite Big Business and hit the wire in 1:51.96 for 1 1/8 miles on the muddy main track.
