Spencer Adkins
Chief Meteorologist
sadkins@wowktv.com

Spencer Adkins Spencer Adkins is the Chief Meteorologist for West Virginia Media. Spencer has won the Associated Press West Virginia Best Regularly Scheduled Weather Award four times and the same award in Ohio once. His department also won the Best Weather Operation from the Ohio Associated Press in 1999 and 2002.

Spencer holds the title Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal via the American Meteorological Society and holds the National Weather Association Seal of Approval.

Spencer started at WOWK as a Charleston Nightbeat Reporter in March 1993 and since then has held positions including Morning Weather Anchor, On-The-Road Feature Reporter, Morning News Anchor and finally landed back in the Weather Department in 1997. Previously, Spencer worked in Peoria, Illinois at WHOI, at WYVN-TV FOX 60 in Martinsburg, WV., at WBOY in Clarksburg, WV and WBKB-TV in Alpena, MI. At the time WBKB was the smallest network affiliate station in America!

Spencer has had the chance to lead our viewers through such memorable storms as the June 2, 1998 tornado that went right across Kanawha City as well as the May 8, 2002 Gallia County F2 Tornado that roared across Route 35. Several major snowstorms during the '90s kept Spencer and his colleagues busy as well as more recent winter storms such as the Presidents Day Storm of 2003. Of course the worst threat to our region is flooding. From the historic 1997 Ohio River floods to the historic levels on the Kanawha River in recent years and numerous other floods in between, Spencer and his team work to keep viewers up to date on any and all water threats. Having been around so long at one station, Spencer has seen weather patterns undergo some major shifts, from drought to major flooding and from heatwaves to the coolest July on record.

Spencer has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan in Communications with emphasis in TV and a Minor in Journalism. He also has a Certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. Spencer is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society. He frequently attends continuing educational seminars through the various professional societies and training offered by the National Weather Service Office.

His hobbies include running, golf, and occasional local race track announcing. When not rooting for his adopted Thundering Herd, Mountaineers, Reds or Bengals, Spencer is still a huge fan of his Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Pistons as well as U of M football. (Sorry Buckeye fans .... nothing personal.) He is also a huge fan of just about all forms of music (played loud) and thunderstorms (also loud).

Spencer and his wife have four sons and live in the Huntington area.
