Man faces charges after driving wrong way on I-79; leads police on a chase

BRIDGEPORT, WV (WBOY) - A man has been charged with fleeing with reckless indifference after police said he led them on a chase down Interstate 79 Monday evening.

John Paul Shelhammer, 31, was traveling south in the northbound lanes, said Chief John Walker of the Bridgeport Police Department.

An officer was dispatched, and after he spotted Shelhammer's car near mile marker 123, the officer turned on his emergency lights in an attempt to make a traffic stop.

Shortly after that, a separate car had rear-ended the cruiser, said Chief John Walker.

Police were able to stop Shelhammer using spikes near mile marker 119. He is currently in the North Central Regional Jail.
