Update: Putnam County Attempted Murder Suspect Blames Pursuit on Drugs

PUTNAM COUNTY, WV (WOWK) - UPDATE STORY: 12/7/17 @ 7:45 p.m.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says that Travis Salmons has been charged with attempted murder, attempt to disarm a police officer, and fleeing with reckless disregard.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Putnam County 911 put out a BOLO or 'Be On the Lookout' for a green chevy truck that was involved in leaving the scene of an accident, which also may have been stolen from Cabell County.

The vehicle was reported to be traveling east on U.S. 60 toward Putnam County.

A Deputy saw a vehicle matching the description traveling east on U.S. 60 at a high rate of speed.

While catching up to the vehicle, it passed another vehicle on a double yellow line. A Putnam County Sheriff Deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of Thompson Road.

As the Deputy began exiting his vehicle, the suspect, identified as Travis Salmons, took off again, and the pursuit continued.

The Deputy pursued the vehicle until Salmons stopped again at the Church of the Nazarene before taking off again and stopping at the area of the Hurricane Dairy Queen.

Salmons then fled to the Route 34/ U.S. 60 intersection where Hurricane Police set up spike strips.

He stopped again briefly but then took off, driving around the spike strips.

The Putnam County Sheriff Deputy, along with Hurricane Police units, continued to the area of Clymers Creek, where Salmons once again stopped again.

An officer entered the Salmons' vehicle through the driver side window in an attempt to shut off the vehicle.

Salmons took off again, dragging the officer and attempting to disarm him.

Hurricane Police Chief Mike Mullins fired his weapon into the front tire of the vehicle in an attempt to stop Salmons' vehicle.

The officer who was being dragged by Salmons' vehicle fired his weapon one time, striking him in the right thigh.

Salmons then stopped again, allowing the patrolman to get out of the vehicle.

He then tried to get into a passing vehicle before being wrestled to the ground and taken into custody.

Salmons was transported to CAMC General Hospital for treatment and was released this morning.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department has charged Salmons with attempted murder, attempt to disarm a police officer, and fleeing with reckless disregard.

Hurricane Police, along with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office are investigating the case.
