Putnam County Schools Eliminate Spring Break

PUTNAM COUNTY, WV (WOWK) - Putnam County Schools Superintendent John Hudson has announced their 2017-2018 school calendar adjustments.

Putnam County Schools say they their reviewed options for making up lost instructional time, worked to keep the impact for students at the forefront and made an effort to minimize disruption to students and families.

They made the following adjustments:

  • The original 2017-2018 School Calendar listed the last date for students as Tuesday, May 29th, 2018
  • The addition of four snow days moved this end date to Monday, June 4th, 2018.
  • Friday, March 16th, 2108 was scheduled as a Professional Development Day for employees. This will now become an instructional day for students.
  • April 2nd through April 6th, which was Spring Break, will become five instructional days for students.
    • Students absent during this time period will be issued excused absences as a result of family activity and/or vacations that may have been planned. This also includes school scheduled events resulting in students being absent.
    • Schools will work with students and their families regarding days that may be missed during what was scheduled as Spring Break.
  • If no additional days are lost due to weather, the last day for students will be Monday, June 4th.
  • They will use Friday, March 16th and April 2nd through 6th maximize opportunities for lost instructional time prior to testing for all students including graduating seniors and students enrolled in college, Advance Placement (AP), and dual-credit courses.
  • June 5th through June 7th will be designated as Professional Development Days for staff and Planning Day.
  • The last day of the employment term for all 200-day employees will be June 7, 2018.
    • This adjustment provides for all 200-day employees to fulfill their required 200-day contract.
