Safety precautions key to staying safe while heating your home

Many people will be looking for ways to stay warm this week. But if they are using space heaters it is important follow all safety instructions.

According to the National Fire Protection Association half of home heating fires are reported during the months of December, January and February.

Like many heating sources if they aren't used properly space heaters can pose a serious danger.

"One of the most important things is to keep a distance from anything that will burn," said Bob Sharp, West Virginia Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal.

He said there are some space heaters equipped with safety features that will shut them off if something is too close or if they tip over.

For more information on how to safely use your space heater you can visit the National Fire Protection Association.

According to the group, space heaters cause close to one third of all winter house fires and 80 percent of all winter heating fire deaths.

It is also vital to make sure you have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home. If you aren't able to afford a smoke alarm or need help installing one contact your local fire department for help.
