Former Naval Base to Reopen Doors to Addicts

The Highlands at Sugar Grove will open in July

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) - Wednesday at the Capitol Meridian Behavioral Health Systems and The Gersh Academy announced their partnership in opening a residential rehabilitation program The Highlands at Sugar Grove.

The Highlands at Sugar Grove will be located in the former Sugar Grove Naval Base in Pendleton County. The base closed in 2015, but Meridian plans to convert the 122-acre facility into a treatment center.

The facility will employ around 200 workers when it opens in July.

"We're going to need everything from housekeepers to cooks to therapists to pharmacists so we're going to have the full continuum of need for services so its going to be a job changer," said Cynthia Persily.

Patients will transition from detox to a 28-day program, with 95 beds available at the facility.

"If you look at the map, as far as where drug treatment programs are in our state, that's a huge area  of our state that really have nothing... It's going to offer services they've never had before," said Persily.
