State Police at Tri-State Airport outside of Huntington tell 13 News the contents of two bottles tested negative for explosives this evening. Further tests are being done to determine why the bottles twice tested positive earlier in the day.
The original security tests were done with an Explosives Trace Detector. The bottles tested positive for explosives, and a re-test confirmed the results. Local law enforcement was notified, and an explosives detection canine team confirmed the presence of explosives.
At 9:15 this morning, Transportation Security Officer Joshua Messinger and TSO Clifford Barker discovered explosive residues as they screened bottles filled with liquid. The bottles were found in a carry-on bag belonging to a 28-year-old woman of Pakistani descent. The unnamed woman was trying to board a US Airways Express flight to Charlotte. She was detained by the FBI, but has not been arrested or charged with any crime.
At 11:25 this morning, West Virginia State Police, the Tri-State Airport Authority and the TSA agreed to evacuate the terminal. The terminal reopened during the afternoon, but incoming flights were canceled by US Airways and Delta Express.
US Airways says flight 4242 from Charlotte -- scheduled to arrive at Tri-State Airport at 9:23 PM was delayed -- and is now supposed to arrive around 11 PM tonight. The full flight schedule for tomorrow (Friday) is set to resume as usual in the morning.
