MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia University's College of Business and Economics recently hired the state's first and only demographer.
Demographers look at the population and examine what population changes mean for state development and the work being done by this new demographer could not only greatly impact the state but even our communities and individuals.
Dr. Christiadi is the newest person to join the Bureau of Business and Research at WVU's College of Business and Economics
"It's an honor," he said. "I like to be here - I graduated from this university and I have a good memory of this town, the school, the people here."
In his new role Dr.Christiadi will be examining the population and making projections of what's to come.
"By understanding the characteristics, the change, the trend you will be able to learn or identify daily phenomenas" Christiadi explained.
Dr.Tom Witt is the director of the bureau. He says Christiadi will also be looking at the population projections for public schools.
"As we work with the state school building authority they need to plan where they're going to be putting new schools or renovations to existing schools," Witt said.
One of the key projects for Dr.Christiadi is working with the Census Bureau to make sure they have a full list of housing units in the state for the people to visit when they're conducting the 2010 census.
"That census 2010 is going to be very critical for West Virginia because it will determine the political representation we have not only in Charleston but in Washington," Witt explained.
Closer to home Dr.Christiadi will study county growth and how it relates to economic development.
"That's the kind of thing that will benefit individuals because they'll have more shopping selection," Witt added.
Dr. Christiadi says his short term goals are working on the 2010 census and producing population projections for the state and all 55 counties. He hopes to finish that this summer.
