Tri-State runners compete in Huntington Saturday morning

By Shane Irwin

HUNGTINGTON -- The WV 5K Championship Run/Walk hit the streets Saturday morning in Huntington. More than 560 runners registered for the race, which began and ended on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Organizers say it's a great way to stay healthy, and reverse some stereotypes.

"This is good that we're promoting fitness and getting everybody out here," Pat Riley, WV 5K Championship Director, said. "And hopefully we can debunk the myth that we are the fattest city in the nation, and we can hand that off to someone else. That's the goal of this."

Ravenswood native Andrew Binford won the race in a time of 14 minutes and 52 seconds. Next year organizers are hoping to get more than 1,000 runners registered.

This was my first 5k although I did run in the Adam Johnson Memorial, but it was a 3 mile course. I thought everything was well organized and everyone that I knew there had a great time before, during and after the race. Thanks to Pat Riley and all the volunteers for their hard work. And also all the sponsors. Hope to see you next year.
