Salvatore known for reporting on the Marshall Plane Crash, and New Thundering Herd in 1970s.
HUNTINGTON -- A well-known sports writer for the Herald-Dispatch newspaper has died.
Ernie Salvatore, 87, died Friday in his Huntington Home.
Salvatore was a writer at the Herald-Dispatch for more than 60 years. A Marshall College graduate, he was known for covering Marshall sports, including the 1970 plane crash and the rebirth of the Marshall program.
Salvatore was portrayed in the 2006 film "We Are...Marshall," as a reporter who asked the tough questions about the new coach Jack Lengyel.
Salvatore won numerous awards for sports writing, and several statewide Journalism awards.
Salvatore was married to long-time wife Joanne Pinckard and had five children.
