WHEELERSBURG, Ohio -- Spend any time in Wheelersburg, Ohio and you'll quickly see the massive amount of pride the people there have for their town.
"The community has an expectation and, everybody that works here, the parents, the kids, the board, the teachers, everybody has a real interest in giving our kids the best they can possible give," said Wheelersburg Principal Matthew McCorkle.
"I have never seen any place like this. I taught at another school district for 5 years before I came to Wheelersburg, and except for maybe on sport, they didn't travel, but here, everybody goes," said cross country head coach, Gary Johnson.
But the cheering isn't limited to athletics, the town fully supports everything Wheelersburg High does.
"It could be a croquet match, it could be an academic competition, if it's orange and black, and it says Wheelersburg, they'll buy it," cheerleading head coach Gail Schmidt said.
And for almost 25 years, a favorite spot is the Shirt Shop, located just blocks from the high school.
"Wheelersburg has a school pride that is just unheard of, and you know, no matter what they have to do, if they have to come in and buy a 5 dollar t-shirt to wear to that football game they'll do it," Shirt Shop owner Melanie Mahlmeister said.
Now, more and more people are wanting in on the success.
"People want their kids to come to Wheelersburg not to just play ball, they want their kids to come to Wheelersburg because of the academic environment and the standards that we hold ourselves to," Schmidt said.
In an effort to further solidify their academics, this year the high school will also add 4 advanced placement courses.
The Wheelersburg soccer team has started preparing early, using scrimmage games to get some experience. Last week the team headed to Jackson for one of many scrimmages. The team is co-ed and the coach says the blending of personalities, and gender, adds variety to the team.
"There's a lot of different personalities that go into the mix and part of that just adds to the excitement of the whole sport," said head coach Paul Doll.
"Each year we hope to overcome losing the seniors and we always look toward an SOC title really," said senior captain Kyle Brooks.
The team already had 9 preseason games -- including tournament wins in Columbus and Athens. The official season starts August 25th.
The Wheelersburg Volleyball has also enjoyed plenty of recent success, and hope that continues as they return a corps of returning players.
Last year the team finished 2nd in the league and district runner up. Coach Carol Bialkowski is entering her 22nd year, and says her girls have been working hard in the offseason, in hopes of taking that last step, and capturing a league championship.
"We're here early all summer. They do put a lot of work in, um, great work ethic it's gonna make a great team and we've talked about that a lot as the month has progressed," Bialkowski said.
"We really wanna push ourselves hard this year and see what can become of this season," senior Logan Barrick said.
The ladies aren't only excelling on the court, but the classroom as well. The team consistently wins awards from the state for their academic achievement, something their coach says is just as important as winning.
