Three killed on Route 52 Monday

FORT GAY --  The Wayne County Sheriff's Department has released the names of the victims in Monday's fatal accident on Route 52 in the Fort Gay area.

Barbara Ailiff, 71, of Williamson, WV, James Ailiff, 38, and James Ailiff, Jr., 2, both of Belfry, KY were killed in the accident.

Police have ruled the incident a tragic accident. Monday afternoon, a truck traveling south on Route 52 hydroplaned, crossing the center line. The truck went into the path of the Chrysler car traveling northbound. Police say there was no way to avoid the crash and the front of the car hit the passenger side of the truck.

Emergency crews on the scene told police there were three ejections from the truck, even though all of them were reportedly wearing seatbelts.

In the car, it appears only the driver, James Ailiff, was restrained. Deputy Hunt says it does not appear the 2 year old was restrained. Also, a toddler passenger, Emily Ailiff, 3, was reportedly in a car seat, but it may not have been buckled correctly.

Beyond the three fatalities, the six other people involved were all transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Carla Ailiff, 32, and Emily Aliff, 3, are both in stable condition. They were passengers in the car.

In the truck, Timothy Stewart, 38, of Catlettsburg, KY, Tiffany Stewart, 14, and Brittany Stewart, 18, are also in stable condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital. The fourth occupant of the truck, Wilma Stewart, 40, of Fort Gay, WV is reportedly in fair condition.

The bodies of the deceased were released to the families.
