FORT GAY -- Tuesday was a tough day for the players and coaches of the Tolsia Rebels. Nearly every piece of football equipment was in the school's facility building that is now nothing more than a pile of burnt debris.
Tolsia High School was created in 1988 after Fort Gay, and Crum High Schools consolidated.
The athletic building was built when the school opened but is now reduced to this charred pile.
"There's a lot of history there. You know, we lost a lot of equipment, that kind of thing, but the history kind of hurt a lot, a lot has been hand made, and we lost a lot when we lost that building," Tolsia High School Head Coach Drew Waller said.
An early morning fire destroyed the entire building, which housed locker rooms, the weight room and dozens of sentimental items including game film from the school's early years, as well as dozens of pictures of old teams, and previous first-team all state honorees.
"It's always been there since I've been little. Many memories been made from past teams, it's the same building. It's just where you work and you up here and see that all down, and you just think about everything that happened in that, and everything's disbelief," senior football player Graham Ayers said.
The team's attention now will focus on the rest of the season but the coach said he's still looking forward to seeing justice served.
"You know, eventually we'll find out who did this and they'll be taken care of I'm sure. But, right now, our kids are having a hard time coping with this. But, we told them the building's gone, but we'll have new equipment for them, and they'll bounce back and I'm sure they'll play well the rest of the season," Waller said.
The state fire marshall's office is asking anyone with information that could help their arson investigation, to call their arson hotline at 1-800-233-FIRE.
Luckily the team already has new equipment ordered, and their upcoming rivalry game with Wayne High School has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
