HURRICANE -- Police say 12 accidents Saturday morning on Interstate 64 West Bound in Nitro were chain reactions, adding there was three inches of water at one point on the interstate.
"In that specific area we have a high volume of crashes due to water not properly draining off the interstate. The drains are actually clogged," said Patrolman Ray Blake of the Nitro Police Department.
Workers at Turnpike Chevrolet counted 6 accidents in four hours Saturday morning and three at one time. When it rains, they anticipate traffic accidents along with police.
"Usually we don't have to watch we can hear them, most of the time you can hear them happen because they'll usually bounce off the retaining wall then off the guard rail," said Daniel Harmon, a Sales Associate at Turnpike Chevrolet in Nitro.
"We're actually compiling a lot of information now from the crashes we had this past weekend and over the past few months that we're going to get together and have a meeting with the department of highways to see if we can come up with a solution," said Patrolman Blake.
A spokesperson with the Department of Highways said paving work in that area just finished, and the contractor has gone back and chipped out the drains that were paved over. They believe the new paving could possibly solve the traffic accident problem in that area, but they will continue to closely monitor the situation, as police get ready for the next rainfall.
Blake said there were no serious injuries as a result of Saturday's accidents, but five people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
