FORT GAY -- In October, the Tolsia High School football team faced an uncertain future after the building that housed the team, and all the of their equipment, was destroyed by fire.
Although the team's season may be over, their work is far from over. And a fundraiser at the school today has begun the rebuilding process.
The football team at Tolsia High School somehow never missed a beat when its football facilities building, which housed the home dressing room, coach's offices, and weight room, was destroyed by fire in October. They're still facing an uphill battle, but had some extra help rallying for support tonight.
The task of raising enough money to rebuild the football building at Tolsia High School began Tuesday evening, and once again the school is already receiving the necessary support.
"We have a great community here, people jump in and help out anytime people are down a little bit. But, we found out that all over the state of West Virginia, and Kentucky, they've jumped in to help us out and we appreciate everything they've done for us," Tolsia High School head football coach Drew Waller said.
While they appreciate the help they've received from people all over the country, it's the support from two of the most recognizable men in West Virginia collegiate athletics that really stole the show. Former Marshall and West Virginia University football coaches Bobby Pruett and Don Nehlen showed up to help get the fundraising efforts started.
"The minute we found out this happened, we got together and we wanted to do something to help because, you know, high school football means so much to the community, southern West Virginia means so much to me, and I wanted to do whatever I could," former Marshall University head football coach Bobby Pruett said.
"This is the kickoff for the fundraising. I don't want people to think when Bob and I go home, that it's over. We're just getting started hopefully, and I saw one check for $25,000, that's not a bad start," former West Virginia University head football coach Don Nehlen said.
A large check was accompanied by many more generous donations, and school administrators say they have their special guests to thank.
"To put on a fundraiser with the caliber of people we have attending here today, and the donations that are coming in from the community, that these guys, just their name has generated, the interest in this fundraiser. It's unimaginable what has taken place here today," Tolsia High School Athletic Director Danny Mayo said.
While tonight was a success, school administrators say they still have plenty of work to do. There's no set price tag for the new building and its adjoining equipment, they say at least $700,000 will need to be raised. After today, the school is already making a dent in that figure. In addition to the donations from the public, the Wayne County School Board announced that they would fund the $34,000 spent to get the team back on the field this season.
That means the school won't have to use insurance money that was awarded after the building fire.
