CHARLESTON -- Instead of reaching for the thermostat when it's cold outside, take a conservative approach to staying warm and keeping costs down.
Here are some tips to help you save money:
Adjust your thermostat down two degrees in the winter.
Open drapes, blinds and curtains during the day to allow sunlight to warm your home.
Close them at night to keep out the cold.
Weatherize your home. Caulk and weatherstrip doors and windows that may leak air.
Properly maintain your home's heating system.
Replace furnace filters every 30 days or so.
Add insulation, especially in your attic and crawl spaces of your home.
Keep fireplace doors and dampers closed when the fireplace is not in use.
At night, keep the thermostat down and add a couple of blankets to your bed.
