Downpours cause more flash flooding

HUNTINGTON -- More spotty downpours caused flash flooding at at least one area business was reportedly struck by lightning in evening storms.

A band of thunderstorms with extremely heavy rain rolled across Eastern Kentucky and sections of West Virginia leaving another 1 to 2 inches of rainfall as estimated by Doppler Radar.

A storm cell pounded the Barboursville and East Pea Ridge areas late Tuesday night. Scanner reports indicated fire crews were being sent to check out a possible lightning strike at the Golden Corral Restaurant on Route 60 between Barboursville and Huntington. Another call went out for a woman who's car was surrounded by water in the parking lot at the Huntington Mall.

Stormtracker 13 Chief Meteorologist Spencer Adkins says with such heavy rainfall rates in such a short time, any paved area would have issues with runoff overwhelming drains.

"When you have rainfall rates of up to 2 inches an hour, any large surface area is going to have a tough time draining, so the water piles up until the storm drains can catch up," said Adkins.

Earlier Tuesday night, areas such as Pike, Floyd, Elliott, Martin, Boyd, Carter, Greenup Mingo and Wayne counties were under various flood advisories and statements as culverts, ditches, small streams and small creeks saw rapid water rises due to the torrential downpours.

Adkins says more heavy downpours are possible again on Wednesday and Thursday until the very humid air mass over the region finally dries out as a new system moves in by Friday. More street flooding will be possible, so residents should be aware of their surroundings if they get caught in a heavy downpour.
