The Wayne Pioneers entered the 2011 season with an unfamiliar look.
The Pioneers have been loaded with senior leadership in the past, but this season Wayne entered the fall with five seniors on its roster.
While Wayne looked to its seniors to lead them back to the postseason for a 14th consecutive season, a junior tailback emerged to be the face and leader of this squad.
Brandon Spurlock is having a dream season.
Spurlock has already eclipsed the 1000 yard rushing mark and is leading the entire state in Class AA in touchdowns with 17.
The Pioneers (7-2) enter Friday's season finale vs. Bluefield (4-4) on a four-game winning streak.
During this stretch, Spurlock has rushed for 386 yards and scored seven touchdowns including three last week in the Pioneers' 29-point upset win over then-No. 8 Chapmanville.
The last two years, Spurlock has seen his number increase, mostly from more playing time and from his work ethic.
In his sophomore season last year, Spurlock scored only 9 touchdowns.
He credits his increase to his hard work in the weight room during the off season and from running track.
Track has made Spurlock become more quick and athletic during the football season.
The future looks bright for this Pioneer.
Add another off season filled with weight training and running track, and Spurlock's senior season next year could be even more impressive.
