The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Charleston attorney Stephanie Thacker's nomination to be a federal judge on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Thursday.

President Barack Obama nominated Thacker to take the place of M. Blane Michael, who died March 25, 2011, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. Rockefeller recommended Thacker's appointment.

"Ms. Thacker has everything I look for when I recommend judicial nominations and I'm so encouraged that the committee approved her nomination unanimously," Rockefeller said in the news release. "She has tremendous integrity, a brilliant understanding of the law and she cares deeply about our state and country."

Rockefeller urged the full Senate to approve the nomination.

"In every sense, Ms. Thacker represents the best and brightest West Virginia has to offer. She graduated at the top of her undergraduate and law school classes; spent 12 years as a federal prosecutor fighting the most horrific crimes imaginable; and is now a top lawyer at one of West Virginia's most respected firms," Rockefeller said in the news release. "There's no question she's the perfect fit for this vacancy."
