The public doesn't usually stop to recognize firefighters and emergency workers until they're needed, but Friday the Charleston Fire Department took time to officially recognize both a firefighter of the year and an EMS worker of the year.
Several departments gathered for the ceremony where a plaque and a helmet were awarded to both Brian Stiltner and Matt Lively, and the celebration continued with a banquet Friday evening.
Charleston Fire Department Chief Chuck Overstreet said not only does the public need to stop and recognize emergency personnel, but it's good for the workers themselves to get together for fellowship and to recognize the hard work they do all year.
