A firefighter fell from a bridge on US Route 119 in Kanawha County and died early Sunday morning, according to emergency dispatchers.

Joey King, 61, had spent seven years on the Davis Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

It happened just after 2 a.m. in the 1100 block of Sproul Road near Alum Creek.

One lane of Corridor G was shut down as crews work to recover the body. There was also a smell of smoke in the area, according to people nearby.

Kanawha County Commission issued a release stating the firefighter had responded to the area to find a reported fire involving railroad tires.

"We mourn this Line of Duty Death of this courageous firefighter and offer our support to the family of this fallen firefighter.  We are working with the fire department at this time with any needs they may have," stated Commission President Kent Carper.

The incident is under investigation by the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office, State Fire Marshal and Medical Examiner.
