According to Kanawha County dispatchers, a Glasgow Police officer was shot in the chest and the hand Tuesday night while responding to a reported burglary.

The burglary had been reported at a mobile home on 208 Glass Fire Lane just after 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say when the officer responded to the call, he approached the front door and the homeowner allegedly shot him.

A SWAT team and several different police departments were called to the scene following the report of a shooting.

The name of the officer has not been released but is said to be in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

The suspect was taken into custody but police have not released his name.

Neighbors told 13News someone had to drag the officer out of harm's way and said the suspect may have some mental issues.

The fire chief lives right up the street from where the shooting happened and he said it was a scary moment when he got the call.

"I heard the street name and this is a quiet neighborhood nothing happens here my adrenaline level went up," Chief Marty Blankenship, of Glasgow Fire Department.

West Virginia State police troopers are now handling the investigation.
