A teacher at Matewan Middle School is being investigated for allegedly sexually abusing students.

Mingo County Prosecuting Attorney, C. Michael Sparks, told 13News James "Jimmy" Keatley, 47, is being investigated by the West Virginia State Police Crimes Against Children Unit.

Sparks also said there are allegations of retaliatory conduct by family members of Keatley who work at the school - on the students involved.

13News made calls to Matewan Middle School to find out the status of Keatley's employment, but no calls were returned at the time this story was published.

Liza Cordiero, spokeswoman for the West Virginia Department of Education told 13News, "We are working in collaboration with the state police and the county school system regarding the allegations. No further information can be shared at this time."

Sparks said the investigation should finish in a couple of weeks and said the case is likely to go before a grand jury.
