Technology you will find in your smart phone or Nintendo Wii, is now being modified for use to relieve chronic pain.
St. Mary's Pain Relief Center in Huntington was the location for the surgery, in the first procedure of its kind in the nation.
The AdaptiveStim with RestoreSensor is a system that uses neurostimulation that interrupts pain signals from reaching the brain. The device takes the motion sensor technology and provides pain relief from chronic back and leg pain.
St. Mary's has implemented the system on many other patients, but Stephanie Bego of Charleston was the first to receive the device that automatically adjusts with the movement of the patient.
"Anybody who doesn't want to take pain pills, this is something that I think is wonderful. So I'm real happy about it. I'm real excited to see how my life will be in the next two or three months," Bego said.
Doctors say the device has already been turned on in Stephanie, and she's already back to work as a health care worker.
