Athlete of the Week: WV State's Robbie Lewis

The 2011 portion of the West Virginia State Men's basketball season was filled with changes and frustration.

The young Yellow Jackets fluttered to a 4-5 start.

But, things are starting to look up for State thanks to one of their key leaders and this week's St. Mary's Athlete of the Week.

A lot has changed in the last year at West Virginia State.

The Yellow Jackets finished 2nd in the conference, but lost the majority of their roster due to graduation.

Head Coach Bryan Poore needed to find new leaders to step up and senior Robbie Lewis has done that.

He has turned into a leader on and off the court.

His perimeter shooting and post moves have improved immensely.

Lewis is averaging 12 points and eight rebounds game and shooting a team-best 56 percent from the field.

While most of the team left campus last summer, Lewis stayed to work with his coaches on his game.

Every morning he was up at 6:30 a.m. to weight lift 3-4 times a week and played basketball for three hours a day for six days a week.

So far, his summer workouts have paid off.
