The mayor of Richwood in Nicholas County is refusing to quit, in the face of charges he misused city money.

John McClung was arrested by state police yesterday. He was released on a personal recognizance bond.

The 65-year-old mayor is accused of taking about two thousand dollars donated to help a low income family with utilities.

13 News tracked him down today, but McClung declined to talk to us on camera about the charges, saying only that he wasn't quitting.

People we talked to in Richwood are upset.

"Oh, it puts a black eye on the whole town when the mayor gets arrested like that," said Bud Persinger.

Mildred Donaldson agreed.

"Shame on him for doing such a thing. These cops and the mayor would have me arrested if I would do something like that," she exclaimed.

"It's a shock," said Candy Persinger. "They need to supervise better who they have to run our town."

The state police told 13 News the arrest followed an investigation sparked by a state ethics commission complaint back in November.
