Lauren Crawley, WOWK-TVSupporters gathered by the hundreds Thursday evening at West Side Elementary School in Charleston.
They were urging members of the Kanawha County Board of Education to reconsider adding "Mary C. Snow" to the school's name.
The proposal to add the name was rejected on Dec. 15, 2011, but support to add the name has continued to grow in the community.
The school held an open meeting Thursday evening to get more response from the community.
"If you look at it the other way, I mean all we're doing is actually just putting her name on, we're not renaming the school. We're just asking them to put her name up on top of the school, you know we're just, nothing wrong with it, It's a few letters," said Cheao Straughter.
Board members also explained the process they went through when naming the school back in 2009.
They said when they held voting in 2009 about naming the school, the turnout wasn't nearly as popular as it is now.
