Huntington's Weed and Seed Program seeing successes

HUNTINGTON -

Huntington leaders are celebrating the successes of the Weed and Seed Program.

The program began in 2008 with a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, and is designed to weed out the drug crime in the Fairfield District, and foster community involvement.

At the center of the program is the Barnett Center, located on the corner of Hal Greer Boulevard and 10th Avenue, a location once known for its open air drug market.

Jennifer Williams, program coordinator for the Weed and Seed program says the center is a place where people come to get involved in the community, and where they can feel safe.

Marshall Crawford, a resident of the Fairfield District says he watched crime rise for 10 years, and has seen it fall over the last couple of years.

A report released earlier this week says the Weed and Seed program has cut drug-related crimes significantly, and that people in the area have more confidence in the police department.
