WV lawmakers eying carbon monoxide detector bill

CHARLESTON -

Members of the West Virginia Legislature are considering a bill that would require carbon monixide detectors in all newly-built one and two family homes

But the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department is hoping to add more places like hotels, motels, schools and hospitals.

South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens said he had put on hold his efforts to require carbon monoxide detectors in hotels in South Charleston in light of last week's carbon monoxide death at a hotel there.  He's waiting to see how the state Legislature treats the issue.

Although supporters feel optimistic about the legislation, they are quick to point out it's not a done deal.

"I'm sure there will be somebody who says we don't like this or we don't like that and they are going to have to negotiate.  There's a lot of process it has to go through so it's by no means done, but I think this is the most opportune time in the face of a tragedy that we can try and get this thing moved," said Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.

The task force chaired by Gupta continues to do their work in educating the public on the importance of carbon monoxide detectors.

To help in those efforts thousands of brochures have been given out at grocery stores and other businesses to show the public the importance of carbon monoxide detectors.
