CHARLESTON -

Lawmakers got first-hand accounts Tuesday of the health costs of premature births.

Members of the March of Dimes and their supporters converged on the state Capitol, pushing lawmakers to think about how the policies they're working on affect the health of mothers and their babies.

"I think we would urge legislators not to be short-sighted when it comes to supporting education and programs that help mothers have happy, healthy pregnancies," said Evan Osbourne, with the March of Dimes.

The day was designed to put child health advocates and parents in direct contact with their lawmakers.
