CHARLESTON, West Virginia -

The body of the driver of an SUV that was missing in the Kanawha River for three days has been sent to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection employee John Damron, 30, drove his state Jeep Cherokee into the river Thursday afternoon. The SUV, which still contained Damron's body, was pulled from the river Sunday.

Friends and family are awaiting answers about why he wrecked into the river.

"He was always a professional," said co-worker Herbert "Benny" Campbell.

According to Campbell, Damron was inspecting a mine in Kanawha County Thursday evening and was likely heading home.

Since Damron started with the DEP in 2005, Campbell knew of no instance where he had problems driving or with his reported diabetes.

"This is the first instance I've ever known where John has had any medical issues or issues with driving," said Campbell.

The Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release preliminary autopsy results in the coming days, first to the Damron family.
