Veterans' graves are in a bad state of affairs at one of the area's oldest cemeteries.
Institute Cemetery is located at the top of a steep hill right next to the new Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, which was dedicated Monday.
However, the old Institute Cemetery is not getting the needed attention the new veterans graves will get. At the old cemetery, I worked with a crew over the weekend to try and get the place presentable for Memorial Day.
However, while working there, people pointed out some veterans' graves that were sinking into the ground threatening to disappear completely.
Some cemetery volunteers claim over the decades some graves at the historically black graveyard have completely sunk into the earth and that some graves are merely marked on a tree.
Some want the new Veterans Cemetery to take over maintenance of the old cemetery right next door to provide a certain level of regular care for the veterans buried there too.
