A man who's been a well-known political figure in West Virginia, was arrested Wednesday.

Hiram Lewis was charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment with a firearm after an incident in Clay County Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release from the West Virginia State Police.

Trooper B. E. Young responded to a shots fired complaint at approximately 1 p.m. at 3150 Elk River Road in Procious, according to the news release. Lewis told the trooper that he wounded Stephen Bogart as he was trying to break into Lewis' house, according to the news release. But Bogart told the trooper that since he was also a resident at the house, he was not breaking in.

Bogart was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Troopers took Lewis into custody and he was arraigned before a Clay County magistrate on Wednesday evening. He was taken to the Central Regional Jail and was being held on a $100,000 cash/surety bond.

Lewis served as the GOP treasurer and ran against Robert C. Byrd for US Senate in 2006. He also lost a bid for West Virginia Attorney General against Darrell McGraw.

The investigation into the incident continues.
