There still is a lot of mystery surrounding a Clay County shooting involving former West Virginia Republican Party treasurer Hiram Lewis and a man named Stephen Bogart.
State Police arrested Lewis after he admitted shooting Bogart in the leg on June 13.
Lewis said the shooting was in self-defense.
Lewis' family believes his story.
"Him shooting him in the knee ought to explain something, that he was just trying to disable him. If he was intentionally trying to harm him, he could have killed him," said his dad, Hiram Lewis III.
His dad said the door leading in to the house is further evidence that Bogart tried to break in.
"You can see this is, this screen is torn out, the door is all crooked. This door here, if you can see here, the dead bolt was broken completely out, where it was broken in, this way," he said.
His father maintains that his son is a good guy who would never hurt someone unless he had to.
But, some neighbor's disagree. They think Lewis has psychological problems and they want him to get the help they believe he needs.
One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said, "He needs to stay in there until they figure out what's wrong with him and he needs to chill out for six months or whatever and really evaluate what he's doing."
Lewis has been charged with malicious wounding and wanton endangerment. He is in the South Central Regional Jail with bail set at $100,000.
His family said they can't afford to bail him out, so he'll likely stay in jail.
"He's always been a good kid. He just moved down here from Morgantown. He has these big dreams of having a business here on the river, and he's always wanted to live here," his dad said.
The State Police hasn't released any more details about the shooting
Troopers interviewed more people about the shooting on Thursday.
Members of Lewis' family said they believe that their son was just protecting himself and his house.
