Senator Jay Rockefeller, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation has announced that a program for science PhD students at West Virginia University received $3 million in funds to support research studying a field related to nanotechnology, which refers to science and engineering conducted at a nanoscale.
The funding will allow students to study the impact of nanomaterials on health and the environment. "Enabling our students to master new fields and innovate will not only help them thrive, but it will allow our communities and West Virginia to grow as well" said Rockefeller.
Rockefeller also goes on and says " This grant is not only about innovation, but about knowing how to use these new materials wisely, and I look forward to seeing what these bright students come up with. By helping West Virginia support new science research at all levels, we are also supporting long-term growth in our economy and building great jobs for our kids
The funding was awarded through the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship which trains and educates PhD scientist and engineers, and gives them the tools to become leaders in their fields. The program also encourages them to translate their research into work that benefits the general public, and in this case how nanmaterials interact with people and the environment will support uses to revolutionize areas such as health care, information technology, energy, homeland security, food, safety and transportation.
