Charleston group practicing 'street medicine' as part of CHASM program

Posted: Updated:

A Charleston group is practicing what it calls "Street Medicine." Medical students and physicians walk the city streets to give out free supplies and medical care to the area's homeless.

It began with the realization that Charleston's homeless shelters fill up each night. There isn't enough room for everyone, according to shelter administrators, so those who don't get a bed are left to fend for themselves out on the streets.

For many who don't have a place to call home, medical problems run rampant. That's where a group called "CHASM" comes in. Members are administering aid and helping those in need. "We walk the streets and try to run into anyone who has fallen on hard times, homeless, someone who could use a free pair of socks, have their blood pressure checked," said Steve Aucciello, the CHASM Street Round Coordinator.

The group is similar to a program already offered in Morgantown. As the word spreads about CHASM, the hope is to expand what services are offered. "We're still trying to get a feel for what the community does need. We've been working with different organizations to see what we can do," according to Aucciello.
