A fairness hearing on a proposed Monsanto class action lawsuit settlement started this morning.

A proposed settlement was reached in the case of Bibb et al v. Monsanto Co. in February, officials said. It includes millions of dollars for clean-up and medical monitoring.

The complainants in the case allege they were injured when the company released an agricultural herbicide from its Nitro plant, according to court documents. Plaintiffs in the case claim chemicals from the plant damaged their property and heath.

Since the proposed settlement was announced, the Putnam County Circuit Court's office has received dozens of letter opposing the settlement, officials said. Those people will have a chance to make their case at today's hearing.

After the hearing the judge is expected to decide whether to accept or reject the settlement.
