UPDATE: crews battle landfill fire in Chesapeake

UPDATE

Chesapeake Fire Chief Ed Webb said several crews are still on the scene as of 8 p.m. Monday evening fighting a landfill fire near Chesapeake.

Fire crews from Chesapeake-Union, Rome, Fayette, and Ceredo are using tanker trucks to haul water to the scene just off Route 52.

Crews are using bulldozers to move landfill material around as firefighters continue to spray water from all directions.

Webb said smoke and fumes coming from the smoldering fire may can be toxic and they are working hard to get the fire out.

Webb said his crew will keep working through the evening until the fire is under control.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is at the scene addressing the situation.

Fire crews are on the scene of a landfill fire near Chesapeake, Ohio, according to emergency dispatchers.

Chesapeake-Union and other fire departments have responded to the blaze.

Tanker trucks are carrying water up the hill to assist in putting out the fire.

There was no word on what started the fire.
