MADISON -
The Boone County commission transferred all ownership of Boone Memorial Hospital to a newly started non-profit organization Tuesday.
Boone Memorial Inc., made up of nine board members, will take over all assets of the counties main hospital on July 1.
It is a plan that has been in the works for years, all in the hopes of funding a new county hospital.
"We can get Department of Agriculture funds that the commission cannot," said Boone Memorial Administrator Tommy Mullins.
The new hospital, which is expected to be open in three years, has an estimated initial cost of $30 million.
No coal severance funds will be used for the hospital, said Mullins.
The county also backed away from the hospital to avoid any liability in medical lawsuits.
