A Marine who was raised in West Virginia and the first person killed in action during the Iraq War was remembered Tuesday night.
First Lieutenant Therrel Shane Childers was honored in the town of Salt Rock when community members and officials unveiled a bridge dedicated to him. Members of his family told fond memories of him growing up and of his bravery fighting for his country. The memorial bridge will be a constant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice he made.
"It's going to mean a lot to the family because every time we come through here, we're going to see his name and keep it alive," said Nora Childers, who is a relative of Lt. Childers.
The day also marks the 40th birthday of Lieutenant Childers. During the ceremony, family members released balloons and sung Happy Birthday.
