One summer camp in the area is designed to help kids through losing a loved one. Camp Nabe is in it's 15th year for the camp and is sponsored by Community Hospice of Ashland. The idea is to let kids know that they are not alone and that there are others are going through the same thing.
"The overall objective of the camp is to create a safe environment. Where each child can feel safe to talk and know that they will be heard," said camp director, Lee Gussler.
One volunteer has been with the program for 15 years and knows firsthand how the camp can help children through a tough time.
"I've run into kids from 10 or 15 years ago. They remember our camp song and will always be a part of their loved ones. They talk about their experience and how it's helped them throughout the years," said Leon Dalton.
Kids get to do activities like canoeing and archery to build confidence, and they also have special counseling sessions to deal with their emotions.
The Kentucky Antler Company offers the Bear Creek Lodge in Boyd County for the use of the camp.
