The Inland Waterways Academy at Mountwest Community & Technical College hosted the Anchors Aweigh Maritime Camp this week.

The camp was for kids in eighth-12th grades.

It featured daily trips and hands-on activities.

The campers took tours of riverboats, museums and shipyards.

They used a riverboat simulator and learned about fire and hazards that can be faced on the river.

"This was something different for the kids to do. I don't know of many areas that will allow the kids to get on the boat and things like that," said coordinator Erica Gilkerson.

Gilkerson adds that this was the first year of the camp but she hopes to make it an annual event every summer.
