Miners who have lost their lives were remembered during the 19th Annual West Virginia Coal Festival Wednesday.
The event took place in Boone County, where coal was discovered in 1742.
Patricia Meeks came out to pay tribute to those who lost their lives. She said the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Whitesville two years ago sent her nephew into the mine to help with the recovery effort.
"It's very emotional. In a few more minutes, I would've lost my nephew," said Meeks.
Some brought their families, saying it is important to teach the younger generation about the significance of mining.
