News reports out of Kentucky say Arch Coal will lay off more than 500 miners in eastern Kentucky today. Kentucky Coal Association President Bill Bissett says he has been informed of the layoffs by an Arch executive, and officials in several counties have told media outlets in Kentucky that they have been notified as well.

Meanwhile, the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader reports that 250 miners at a mine in West Virginia will be laid off today, also.

Arch Coal says it will have an announcement later today.

This would be the second major work force reduction for Arch in Kentucky this month. On June 8, Arch announced it would eliminate 436 jobs in Kentucky but give 286 of those workers the opportunity to relocate to open positions in Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia, for a net loss of 150.

UPDATE: In an email to The State Journal and WOWK-TV, Bissett said, "More than 500 E. Ky. coal miners with Arch Coal will be laid off. More information will be available about these layoffs later today."
