CHARLESTON, West Virginia -
The two men accused of robbing the United Bank in the Charleston Town Center mall Thursday are getting support from friends and family.
The wife of Billy Gene Reed, 40, who identified herself as "Princess Smith," said her husband wouldn't commit a crime like this.
"This isn't him," said Smith. "He wouldn't do something like that."
She claimed Reed had no access to a handgun like the one police say he brandished at tellers in the early morning robbery.
The two stayed at a homeless shelter along Leon Sullivan Way in Charleston. Friends of Anthony Williams, 20, claim he has never been a violent person.
"That boy don't even have enough nerves to steal a piece of candy," said friend Ray Barnette. "I've known Anthony for a year and a half. I've never known him to mistreat anybody or hurt anybody."
Williams does not have a criminal record.
Police said it was Reed who was carrying a handgun. Reed was arrested April 6 on charges of reckless driving, fleeing on foot and driving on a suspended license. He was also convicted of federal drug charges in 1992 and again in 1994.
The two remain behind bars on $50,000 cash only bond.
