Charleston police asking for help in identifying Cato Pool break-in suspects

Posted: Updated:

The Charleston Police Department is asking for the public's help in solving a crime.

It might have been done in good fun, but police are taking the break-in very seriously.

It happened on June 16 around 3 a.m.

Four people scaled a fence at the pool, and took an early morning swim.

"It is a break-in, and it's very dangerous. You go up there, the lights are off. The people on this video are obviously intoxicated. It's a liability issue for us and a real safety issue for anyone who'd try to do something like that," Sergeant Bobby Eggleton.

Since the break-in happened in the middle of the night, there were no lifeguards on duty.  But, security cameras were rolling and caught the suspects in the act.

"We have four straight cameras, four in a row, that caught them all the way parking, walking in, climbing the fence, going in the pool, coming out of the pool, exiting, and driving off," said John Charnock, Executive Director of Charleston Parks and Recreation.

Police believe the suspects are in their late teens or early 20s.

Charnock said the break-in is a huge liability issue.  If one of suspects would have gotten hurt, it could ruin summertime fun at the pool for everyone.

"It's really a shame that it comes down to this, that when a pool is open, and no one is charged to go swimming, that you have to climb the fence at night, just to have fun," Charnock.

Police will do extra patrolling in the area to make sure midnight swimmers stay far away from the Cato Pool.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Charleston Police Department at 304-348-6480.
