US Supreme Court releases decisions on juvenile sentences, immigration, not health care

The U.S. Supreme Court today issued widely anticipated rulings – just not the big one court watchers were expecting.

Justices issued no ruling on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Their next shot will be Thursday, which is the last day of the term for the court.

The court, however, did issue rulings that could have far-reaching effects. In the first, justices ruled 5-4 that it is unconstitutional for sentence juveniles to life in prison without parole in murder cases.

The decision came in the robbery and murder cases of Evan Miller and Kuntrell Jackson, who were 14 when they were convicted. Miller was convicted of killing a man in Alabama. Jackson was convicted of being an accomplice in an Arkansas robbery that ended in murder.

In the other ruling released today, justices struck down most of an Arizona immigration law. Justices ruled 5-3 that most of the law is unconstitutional because immigration law enforcement is the job of the federal government. Justice Elena Kagan recused herself from the case. She previously was the Obama Administration's solicitor general.

The court today also reaffirmed a two-year-old decision against limits on corporate campaign spending, according to the AP. In a 5-4 decision, justices ruled that the rule against limiting how much corporations spend extends to state and local races.
