About 50 nature loving Boone County residents make a major difference by digging through the coal river for old tires. Organizers said they could use all the help they can get, so I said "Let Don do it."

The group and I spent about four hours Saturday morning loading old tires on to canoes and flat bottom boats.

The group collected about 100 tires that were hauled away by the Department of Environmental Protection.

The river clean up is also an effort to spruce up the river in preparation for the Fifth Annual Community Float.

The coal river float and picnic will begin at Racine Park at 10 a.m. Saturday July 28. It will end at Dartmont Park where the picnic will be held.

There is no entry fee but you will need to bring your own boat or inner tube to float the river.
