Charleston lost the most people between 2010 and 2011 while Morgantown was the biggest gainer, according to population estimates released today by the Census Bureau.

The estimates are the first for municipalities since results from the 2010 census were released. Overall, West Virginia's cities and towns increased in population by 436 people to a total of 642,151, the estimates show.

Charleston remains the state's largest municipality with 51,177 people, while Thurmond remained the smallest, with a population of 5.

Charleston lost 223 people since the 2010 census, according to the estimates. Wheeling lost 131, Weirton 95, Moundsville 84 and New Martinsville 74.

Meanwhile, Morgantown gained 633, Martinsburg 260, Huntington 115 and Westover 105.

West Virginia had 14 cities with 10,000 or more people in 2010. Those cities, their 2010 census count and their 2011 estimates follow:

  • Charleston: 51,400 in 2010; 51,177 in 2011.
  • Huntington: 49,138 in 2010; 49, 253 in 2011.
  • Parkersburg: 31,492 in 2010; 31,557 in 2011.
  • Morgantown:  29,660 in 2010; 30,293 in 2011.
  • Wheeling: 28,486 in 2010; 28,355 in 2011.
  • Weirton: 19,746 in 2010; 19,651 in 2011.
  • Fairmont: 18,704 in 2010; 18,764 in 2011.
  • Beckley: 17,614 in 2010; 17,675 in 2011.
  • Martinsburg: 17,227 in 2010; 17,487 in 2011.
  • Clarksburg: 16,578 in 2010; 16,649 in 2011.
  • South Charleston: 13,450 in 2010; 13,396 in 2011.
  • St. Albans: 11,044 in 2010; 11,001 in 2011.
  • Vienna: 10,749 in 2010; 10,770 in 2011.
  • Bluefield: 10,477 in 2010; 10,482 in 2011.
